Turbigo (IT): thermoelectric plant upgrading

Project name: Thermoelectric plant upgrading

Contracting company: IREN

Client: ANSALDO ENERGIA SPA

Type of work: Electrical installations

Place of work: Turbigo

Work start date: 2021

Project Description

The thermoelectric power plant in Turbigo has been equipped with a new AE94.3A gas turbine that will increase its capacity from the current 850 MW to about 1,280 MW, all powered by natural gas.

The 430 MW capacity expansion was awarded at Capacity Market auctions:

  • Of about 105 million euros in total, spread over the 15 years starting in 2022 (about 7 million euros/year), for the new gas turbine section as “new authorized capacity.”
  • Of about 12 million euros in total, about 6 million euros/year for the years 2022 and 2023, related to the existing steam turbine as “existing capacity,” but today unused, which thanks to repowering will be reactivated.

This investment highlights Iren’s support for the energy transition process by ensuring the security and flexibility of production necessary to balance the intermittency of renewable sources. The new combined cycle, which will have an efficiency of 57%, will be able to realize the first parallel by 03/31/2022, while the end of experimental operation and testing will be realized by 06/30/2022.
